GENERAL
Q. You run excellent tutor-led training courses. What’s the idea behind on-line tutorials?
A. We firmly believe there is no substitute for tutor-led training – our trainers have broad experience and have the expertise to place a topic into context for a diverse audience.
However, feedback tells us that many users only need access to GIS on an occasional basis, for example on a specific project. When they come back to use it again a few months later it’s not easy to get up to speed quickly.
Online Tutorials are the solution to this problem. They are not intended as a substitute for a tutor-led training course, instead they complement the traditional approach to training, to act as a memory jogger and make it easier for you to answer the question “How Do I …. ?”

Q. How many people from my organisation can use this?
A. The licensing works so that once an administrator has set up an account, any user from that organisation can register and apply for a password during the subscription period. Up to 40 users may be registered from a single organisation (N.B. users must share the same email domain, e.g. user@ salford-gis.co.uk)
Q. What if I want to watch the tutorial over again?
A. The system includes Pause and Play buttons for your convenience, and you are free to replay the tutorials as many times as you like.
Q. Can I download the tutorials?
A. No, they are not downloadable. However by logging into our site you can view them from any computer with a compatible web browser.
Q. The topic I’m struggling with is not covered in the list of tutorials.
A. Please let us know – we are looking to expand the range of topics all the time and so we may be able to add this topic – email us on tutorials@salford-gis.co.uk.
Q. Our organisation is interested in the concept of online tutorials, but we’d like them to illustrate our data and techniques. Do you offer a bespoke service?
A. Yes, we have the facility to develop and host bespoke tutorials that would be accessible only to your organisation. Please enquire at tutorials@salford-gis.co.uk
SOFTWARE
Q. I use an older version of the GIS software than is listed on Online Learning. Are the tutorials still relevant?
A. You will find that much of the material is still highly relevant, since many of the software upgrades tend to be cosmetic and don’t alter the core functionality all that much. However we will be releasing new editions of the tutorials based on future software releases so in time it will be possible to step back to earlier versions.
Q. What software do I need to be able to access the Online Tutorials?
A. You only need a standard web browser with the free Adobe Flash plug-in installed. The site has been tested on Internet Explorer v7 & v8 and Mozilla Firefox v3, but should work on most web browsers.

Q. What will happen as new versions of my GIS software are released?
A. We aim to have new versions of the tutorials available as soon as possible after any software upgrade. In addition we will have a number of “What’s New In” tutorials to help you quickly identify and benefit from new features.
Q. My organisation has signed up only for the ArcGIS (or MapInfo) tutorials, but my department uses MapInfo (or ArcGIS). Can we upgrade our licence?
A. Yes, it is possible to upgrade your licence. The cost will depend how many months remain on the current subscription – call us for a quote on 0161 278 2440 or email tutorials@salford-gis.co.uk
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Q. I have a problem relating to the GIS software I’m using. Can I speak to someone at Salford GIS?
A. We offer a number of technical support options which can be purchased at any time during your subscription period. As a subscriber to Online Tutorials you will receive a discount on the usual rates.
LICENSING
Q. Do I need a MapInfo or ArcGIS Desktop licence in order to use the Online Tutorials?
A. You don’t need a licence for the software in order to follow the tutorials, but to get the most out of them you will need to try out the various techniques and so you will need a fully licensed copy of the software.
Q. How long does the Online Learning subscription last?
A. Usually a subscription last for 12 months from the date the account starts. Additional users from a subscribing organisation may be added at any time during that period, however the expiration date will remain the same. A 24 month licence is also available.
