Practical GIS Awareness for Local Government Managers
Satellite navigation, Google Maps, Microsoft Virtual Earth - it appears that maps are becoming more widely used, understood and expected as a means of accessing and disseminating information. A consequence of this is that GIS is becoming more of a mainstream tool within local authorities. Senior managers are increasingly expected to understand, exploit and make decisions on investment in this growing area of technology.
The objective of this half-day training course/seminar is to de-mystify GIS/Mapping and explain how it can be of benefit through the use of practical examples. Many of the examples illustrate how different local authorities are using GIS to help meet the demands of the Efficiency Agenda and Service Transformation.
For the benefit of the complete novice, the course begins with a clear and logical explanation of what GIS is. The closing session of the course speculates on where the technology is moving and how it is likely to be applied in the future.
The course is specifically developed with senior managers and decision makers in mind; those who need a non-technical understanding of GIS technology and the benefits that it could realise for their department/organisation at both a practical and a strategic level. It is intended to be as relevant for organisations that have already rolled out solutions as for those who are still considering it.
The following areas are covered:
|
|
"Very informative and well presented. Packed but enjoyable."
Gary Devine, Technical Information Officer, Environment Operations, Trafford Council
"Very interesting and enjoyable course - would recommend. The practical examples were especially useful."
Helen Morrison, Senior Customer Services Advisor, West Lancashire District Council
Courses will be run at client’s offices enabling Management Team members, senior officers and/or Elected Members to attend with the minimal of disruption and without the need to travel. An alternative approach would be for one local authority to host the course while inviting delegates from neighbouring authorities, thereby allowing costs to be shared.
Prices vary depending on the anticipated number of delegates but for guidance purposes the minimum charge for a half-day course is £800 for up to 10 delegates. Authorities interested in hosting a training course to which neighbouring authorities are invited will be allocated a number of free places.
