We are delighted to be able to offer courses in Scotland, in association with Forth Valley GIS. The course structure is different from those run at Salford, with all courses of one-day duration.

ArcGIS v9 to v10 Conversion

With the launch of a major new release of ESRI's ArcGIS suite, v10, there are significant changes to the user interface and several exciting improvements to the software functionality. To help ease the transition, and to ensure you get the most out of your investment, we're offering a one-day "ArcGIS v9 to v10 Conversion" training course.

"ArcGIS v9 to v10 Conversion" is aimed specifically at existing users with an ArcView v8.x or v9.x licence who have upgraded or plan to upgrade to v10. Topics Include:

  • New embedded Catalog and ArcToolbox windows, enhanced searching for tools, data and symbols, and basemap layers
  • Changes to metadata tools
  • New Selection tools and GeoProcessing menu
  • New Layout capabilities, with dynamic text and Data Driven Pages
  • The new 'sketch-based' editing process with major improvements to feature selection, geodatabase support and snapping
  • Temporal data support - using time-based data in ArcGIS

Course requirements:

  • Completion of 'Starting out in ArcGIS v8 or v9' training or appropriate knowledge and experience using ArcGIS
  • Good level of PC ability e.g. using mouse, keyboard etc.
  • Good understanding of windows software e.g. navigating around files using windows explorer, renaming files, creating folders etc.

ArcGIS v9 to v10 Conversion

Starting out with ArcGIS v10

This one-day course introduces new users to ESRI’s desktop GIS software by means of tutor led teaching and hands-on exercises. The course covers data analysis and map creation and will show you how to add datasets from database connections, use and create layer files and how to navigate files using ArcCatalog. You will also learn how to choose your own symbology for data, present data in a layout, query datsets and adapt existing attribute data within tables.

Topics Include:

  • Exploring ArcMap using the navigation tools
  • Using ArcCatalog
  • Creating map documents using different data sources
  • Using symbology
  • Labelling features
  • Creating spatial & attribute queries
  • Creating layouts for printing and exporting maps

Course requirements:

  • Good understanding of windows software e.g. navigating around files using windows explorer, renaming files, creating folders etc.

Data Capture in ArcGIS v10

This one-day course continues on from Starting Out in ArcGIS - introducing the concepts and methods of creating & maintaining geographic data in the Desktop GIS. The course introduces existing users to data capture by means of tutor led teaching and hands-on exercises using ArcGIS.

The course will show you how how to create a new dataset from scratch. And you will learn how to create new polygons by digitising, reshaping and splitting, create and modify polygons using more advanced tools such as merge, auto complete topology tools, use existing data to digitise (trace and snap) and perform table joins based on spatial location attributes.

Topics Include:

  • Creating new shapefiles and geodatabases
  • Data capture techniques
  • Introduction to joining and relating tables into the GIS
  • Creating and using buffers

Course requirements:

  • Completion of 'Starting out in ArcGIS' training or appropriate knowledge and experience using ArcGIS
  • Good level of PC ability e.g. using mouse, keyboard etc
  • Good understanding of windows software e.g. navigating around files using windows explorer, renaming files, creating folders etc

Data Capture in ArcGIS v10

Extending your Skills in ArcGIS v10

This one-day course is an additional ArcGIS training session aimed at developing existing ArcGIS skills learned in Starting Out in ArcGIS and Data Capture in ArcGIS.

The subsequent GIS knowledge can be used by staff creating new data, editing existing data or analysing data in ArcGIS. The course covers creating data from tables, using tools to calculate values automatically and producing graphs from GIS. You will learn about additional symbology and labelling elements along with further editing techniques using specialised tools and Arc Toolbox.

Topics Include:

  • Creating GIS data from tables
  • Using definition queries
  • Automatic calculation of values and geometries
  • Producing graphs from GIS
  • Enhanced symbology and labelling elements
  • Advanced editing techniques and commands
  • Introduction to ArcToolbox
  • Data management methods using change intelligence

MapInfo Introduction

This one-day course introduces new users to MapInfo Professional by means of tutor led teaching and hands-on exercises. The topics take you from your first start-up of Mapinfo through displaying and manipulating maps. Map production is also covered to allow you to get top quality maps out of your GIS.

MapInfo Intermediate

This one-day course builds on what is learned in MapInfo Introduction, and will show you how to create new map layers, through digitising and geo-coding. It also instructs you on basic table manipulation and management. Some basic querying, selection and thematic mapping is also covered.
