Project Management
For many organisations, the procurement and implementation of a new or replacement corporate mapping system is a one-off exercise and one that requires those managing such a project to quickly develop new skills. There is a need to understand the overall business requirements and drivers, gain an awareness of the market and product availability, understand and comply with formal procurement processes and identify and manage the wide range of tasks required to bring the project to a successful conclusion.
Salford GIS consultants have many years of hand-on experience when it comes to specifying, procuring and implementing land and property related systems. These skills are not limited to purely GIS-based systems but often involve the implementation of operational systems and back-office solutions and the integration of these with GIS.
Years of experience has shown that a key factor often overlooked in such projects is the human element. Relying on the most appropriate technology, the right software tools for the job and the best available data is not enough to ensure success. Projects of this nature require buy-in and a positive commitment from both senior managers and users. If the project is not managed in line existing skills, resource availability and an internal desire to achieve a successful implementation then there is a high risk of failure.
When it comes to implementing land and property related systems, our consultants not only understand the business, the products and the data but also bring to the project an appreciation of the personnel issues and concerns that always accompany a period of major change. We are strong believers that systems such as this cannot be “pushed in” to an organisation – they have to be “pulled in” from inside. User involvement is at the centre of our project management methodology, which is firmly founded on PRINCE2 principles.
Recent implementations we have been involved in include:
- Corporate GIS solutions
- Intranet mapping
- Web mapping portals
- Planning and Building Control systems
- Local land charges systems
- Environmental health
- Land terrier systems
