Practical GIS Awareness for Local Government Managers
(Two AGI CPD Points)Satellite navigation, Google Maps, Microsoft Bing Maps - it appears that maps are becoming more widely used, understood and expected as a means of accessing and disseminating information. A consequence of this is that GIS is becoming more of a mainstream tool within local authorities. Senior managers are increasingly expected to understand, exploit and make decisions on investment in this growing area of technology.
The objective of this half-day training course/seminar is to de-mystify GIS/Mapping and explain how it can be of benefit through the use of practical examples. Many of the examples illustrate how different local authorities are using GIS to help meet the demands of the Efficiency Agenda and Service Transformation.
For the benefit of the complete novice, the course begins with a clear and logical explanation of what GIS is. The closing session of the course speculates on where the technology is moving and how it is likely to be applied in the future.
The course is specifically developed with senior managers and decision makers in mind; those who need a non-technical understanding of GIS technology and the benefits that it could realise for their department/organisation at both a practical and a strategic level. It is intended to be as relevant for organisations that have already rolled out solutions as for those who are still considering it.
The following areas are covered:
- An introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for managers
- The importance of the Local Land and Property Gazetteer
- Availability of local, regional and national data for use in GIS
- The use of GIS alongside existing operational systems
- Practical examples to illustrate how GIS is being deployed within UK Local Government
- Service improvements and efficiencies through the use of GIS
- GIS as a mechanism for interacting with the public
- The benefit of GIS in a shared services environment to aid inter-departmental and inter-agency working
- Data management in a GIS environment
- Where next for mapping? - Exploiting new technologies
