Salford City Council

In 2004, Salford GIS Limited were appointed to undertake a review of GIS within Salford City Council and prepare a strategy which would increase access to GIS functionality, and enable the consolidation of data from four existing systems. The strategy was endorsed by both committee and existing users.

In September 2005 the company was again approached and asked to implement the strategy that it had authored, working on a part-time basis (2 days per week).

The consultant established an active user group and project steering group and followed the Council’s PRINCE 2 methodology to specify, procure, and implement software and services to meet the requirements of the strategy.

As a result of the work the council now has a single spatial data warehouse that stores data in a generic format, and which can be used by all incumbent GIS systems to store and share their data. Public and Internal web-based interfaces have been created to give both citizens and everyone within the Council access to a wide variety of high quality geographical data.

Within less that eighteen months, Salford GIS Ltd have worked hand-in-hand with Council employees to provide a system which adopts international standards, and which will form the platform for widespread use and further development of GIS as a tool to benefit all aspects of the Council's work.
